Diplomatic language

This is the front page of today’s Israel Hayom (“Israel Today”) newspaper, summarizing the position about Syria and USA action:


The main headline translates as “Obama puts on the brakes.” Hebrew speakers will probably get a wry smile out of that headline, given the use of the English word “brakes” converted into Hebrew letters. Yes, Hebrew is another language much influenced by English – for good and for bad.

The right hand picture shows Israelis stocking up at the supermarket; not – so far as I can tell – anything to do with whether we will get unwanted attention from Syria or any of its allies, but because of the forthcoming Rosh Hashanah festival starting on Wednesday night of this week.
