Last night, Susan and I were at the Maccabiah opening ceremony in Teddy Kollek stadium in Jerusalem. The competing athletes from all the countries paraded round the stadium, and then there was a live show. The speeches were a bit too much, but the event was wonderful. I don’t have time to do a detailed report before Shabbat, so offer these links: here, here and here.

What I do want to post, while I remember, is that all the speakers – Netanyahu, Peres, Barkat (mayor of Jerusalem) and the Maccabi World Union President – specifically referred to Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish people. It’s a shame that Obama and Cameron’s contributions were taped (nice of them to contribute, though) as it would have been better for them to hear it in person.

Tidbit: who got the loudest cheer from the crowd? None of the above. It was Benny Gantz, head of the IDF. Interesting.

Shabbat Shalom!
