Set in contemporary Britain, this is a strange tale of employers and servants, lovers and enemies, populating the imaginary Hexam Place in London.
The plot, such as it is, involves a semi accidental death being covered up by an unlikely duo. Things do not quite spin out of control, but the situation does get worse.
The book is full of characters – unbelievable, mostly – but not much action. Some of the racial aspects are stereotypical and slightly offputting. There’s not much else to say because the book left me with a sense of… nothing.
It has no direction. It may be intriguing, it may have potential, but it delivers nothing. It’s like a modern fairy tale without the message. Or the fairies..
I just did not get it.
Score: 5/10.
